Unlimited Rabbeting for Perfect EdgesWhen working near edges or on rabbets, traditional electronic planers often leave a lip that has to be removed by hand, but the Festool HL 850 E planer eliminates that extra step. Because the planer head is mounted to one side, it sits flush with the opposite side of the planer housing. And because this allows it to plane across the entire width of the rabbet, you can use the HL 850 E to make perfect cuts that are flush to an adjacent surface.
The HL 850 E's thumb-lock depth control is easy to manipulate with one hand, so it's easy to adjust the planer's depth settings to match the resistance of the material you're working with. The versatile HL 850 E can handle 0 to 9/64-inch cutting depths.
A retractable side guard offers improved job-site or workshop safety. This guard swings up and to the side as the rabbet depth increases, which ensures that planing up to the edge in deep rabbets is not a problem.
Chatter-Free Single-Knife Cutter Head
The HL 850 E's metal carbide, spiral cutter head is built to deliver a smooth, "chatter-free" cut, and it features a replaceable blade, so you can utilize the same durable head for longer. This head allows the planer to sheer-cut materials, delivering cleaner, smoother cuts that are ready to glue or finish, and also allows the planer to be quieter for an improved operator experience. The head measures 3-15/64 inches wide, and its unique setup keeps blade changes quick--you simply loosen three screws, replace the blade, and then retightens the screws. The blade is self-aligning, so you can get back to work quickly and accurately.
The planer also accepts a range of interchangeable heads, which allows you to achieve distressed looks, hand-hewn textured effects, and a range of other finishes.
MMC Electronics and Application-Specific Performance
