Product Description: Experience the power and reduced weight of the new lithium-ion technology, without the high cost. Lithium-ion cordless tools provide more power with less weight. This cordless drill-driver is a more compact, lighter-weight version of the LXT 18 volt tool. It has a 1.5 amp hr battery, which is half the size of the LXT 3.0 Amp hr batteries. This is not a light-duty tool by any means; it kicks butt in the 18-volt category. It boasts 450 in./lbs. of torque! You can even use the longer run time 18-volt LXT 3.0 Amp-hr batteries in this tool (the higher the amp hr rating, the longer the battery will last before it needs to be recharged).

This cordless drill weighs only 3.5 pounds, the lightest yet of any professional 18 volt. It has a comfortable grip and excellent ergonomics, which is ideal for continual use. Located just above the trigger, are two "headlights." Headlights refer to small LED lights that provide light where you need it most. I was skeptical about this feature, thinking it was just another gimmick, but after using it for some time, I've come to depend on it. From lighting my way to the house in the dark, when bringing the batteries/tools on cold nights to providing light in a dark cabinet, closet, or under a desk, this a must-have feature. Rubber grips adorn the exterior of this tool and protect it during impact if it falls. For all that you get with this tool package, the price is unbelievably low. This 18 volt is perfect for the professional who needs a powerful cordless to use all day long.

This Makita drill also has the most advanced charging system available and it charges in only 15 minutes! Generically, it's called a "smart charging system." A computer chip inside the battery lets the charger know exactly how to optimally charge the battery, to completely charge each cell within the battery and for maximum battery life. Each battery is made up of smaller 1.2 volt cells. Often a battery will drain unevenly during normal use, at different rates within these internal cells. A normal charger will stop charging the battery when one cell reaches maximum capacity, not all of them. Once this happens once, it will continue to do so as long as you use the battery. What this means is your 18-volt battery is now a 16- or 17-volt battery and it can drop even lower. A "smart charger" will charge every cell independently until each cell is fully charged, so your 18-volt battery will remain 18 volts for its entire life. This charger has a fan in it and blows air through the battery to cool it down before charging so the battery can be charged right away, unlike other brands, where the charger waits until the battery cools, or even worse attempts to charge a hot battery pack and damages it or decreases the life of the battery. These Makita lithium-ion batteries will last longer than standard batteries and can be charged over 1200 times, as opposed to the standard of 600 to 800 times, which alone can justify the slightly higher price tag. -- Gabriel Shantara Ford

4 stars Powerful & Lightweight Med-Duty Cordless Drill
I researched cordless drills fairly heavily before finally picking this one. This particular model was one of the top rated choices in consumer reports for all purpose cordless drills, and the deciding factor for me was it's bang for the buck ... or more specifically, it's power to weight ratio (courtesy of it's cutting edge lithium-ion battery), and speed of recharging. I'm just a handy homeowner, not a construction worker, so this drill is more than adequate for even my heaviest needs.

The good (in no particular order):

* LIGHTWEIGHT: As of this writing, this is easily the lightest drill in it's power class - light enough even for my wife to use.

* TORQUE: This drill has plenty of oompf. On maximum torque, it can not only drive, but countersink fairly deeply, 4" star-point deck screws, without a starter hole ... granted that ya gotta lean on it heavily so the screw head won't strip & the drill won't torque sideways, but it gets it done.

* CHARGER: At a mere 15 mins, the recharge time is excellent - even with fairly heavy use, by the time you use up one battery, the spare has long since finished recharging. The charging base also has smart charging capability, which is both energy efficient and extends the life of the batter packs (i.e., rather than going through a full charge cycle for batteries that are only minimally depleted, it's able to quickly 'top off', and then switch to 'trickle-charge' mode.

* ADJUSTABILITY: With 2 speeds, and 17 torque settings, this drill's extremely adaptable. With setting 1 & 2 you can grip the chuck in your bare hand and have the drill quickly and loosen itself, or drive small screws into soft chipboard without stripping. With the heavier settings, you can countersink larger screws into hardwood.

* LIGHT: The drive light helps see in dimly lit recesses, and navigate in a dark room.

I only have 2 nits:

1) The direction change button is too close to the trigger - I find that I'm frequently having to reseat it after my gripping hand jostles it. People with large hands (mine are medium) could have a problem with this minor design flaw. It needs to be relocated.

2) I'm a diehard buy-American-made-products kinda guy - and this is made in Japan. Oh well. The closest equivalent model (by "Rigid" if I recall) was a full pound heavier ... too heavy for my wife.

Highly recommended.

5 stars Very good buy
I did a lot of research before I bought this drill/driver. The reduced price and the extra battery (MIR) was also an added incentive. Very good buy. I have used it on many projects in and arond the house.

5 stars Best drill I've ever purchased
I've been through quite a lot of cordless drills, I could not seem to find one that would have a decent longevity on the battery as well as good power. I should have known to chose Makita, because they manufacture quality products.
This cordless drill is lightweight (due to battery size), compact, easy to operate and I even like the small light that illuminates the work surface when you start drilling. I have been waiting for awhile for a drill that DID NOT use a NI-CD battery, due to battery memory issues and the short life span of the batteries.

5 stars Finally a drill with ergonomics and convenience in mind
I have had lots of drills over the years and this one tops them all. It is small and easy to hold, yet powerful. The light is very handy when working in low light area's, which i do alot. It charges very quickly and the case has room for extra bits, etc.
Makita did well when designing this drill.

5 stars This drill is great
Presently own 8 dewalt 18 volt drills and hammer drills. Bought this Makita
just to try something different and fell in luv with this drill. Just ordered 2 more for my collection. This tool is super light and the light in front is very helpful. I have a contracting company and for kitchen cabinet work this is a great tool. This is also heavy duty enough for any kinda of work. Waiting for the right angle drill price to come down a little. It's presently almost $ 350.00. There was no picture on the website waiting to see how this drill looks, the dewalt which i have 2 is a little bit bulky.
My goal is to switch to all Makita 18 volt
